Organic light-emitting diode Television is a new communication technology for Televisions which plan on being in mass production for consumers in or around the year of 2010.An OLED is composed of several organic compounds that emit their own light, not so much different then what one would find in a lightning bug.
The advantages for using this type of technology, would be that it gives the user a greater High- Definition experience and has a viewing range at 170 degree angle and there is no back-light and operates at a very low current at 2-10 volts. The OLED have no back light so it is made of several layers of doped fluorocarbon polymers which is usually less then 0.5 thousandths of a millimeter thick; what this means is typically the screens are unbreakable and can be rolled up and folded ,and there would be no damage to the screen . The OLED televisions are also so thin you can literally hang it on the wall with tape.
The cost of this new technology is $2,499 for an 11 inch TV from Sony; this is another disadvantage, due to the fact that many people are not going to pay this price for an 11 inch Television except for the early adaptors who like to be the first people to acquire a new technology. When this new technology hits mainstream I believe that many people will be staying home and watch so much TV that it will have a negative effect on adolescence health and social skills.

This is one technology I’ve been really curious to learn about so I’m glad I stumbled upon your page. I find it amazing that, despite water damage which I believe this can be easily fixed with a protective screen, this television is basically indestructible. I was surprised to learn also that you can roll the screen and it would still work fine. Coming from the person who has popped two computer screens, this is a great addition to technology. It was also interesting to learn that the same idea’s to illuminate this TV are the ones we find in nature. Who would have guessed a lady bug would be an inspiration for TV?

Price is a huge deterrent for me. i would love to have one of these units but not for that price-tag. The fact that the technology is organic is (for a lack of better words) weird to me. Interesting, but weird. I will probably check the units out once they hit stores. Ive also heard rumors about a special paint that can be put on walls that can be used as a tv screen. Technology is amazing.
